POSTER COLOURS

Thanjavur painting, which uses poster colours as its medium, is a classical painting style, which originated from the temple town of Thanjavur in South India. And is characterised by its three dimensional form and gold leaf work.

A typical thanjavur painting comprises of deities (mostly) in the Indian religious panorama, decorated with ornate jewellery, throne and other such traditional settings. The rich variety of poster colours complement the gems and gold tones perfectly.

Goddess Mahalakshmi, depicted here in Thanajvur style, is an Indian deity.

The work includes the typical aspects of this style - gold leaf work, coloured stones and bright poster colours.

An additional feature in this piece is the mirror edging.

To depict the presiding deities of the Thirupathi temple using Thanjavur art, I have used the traditional techniques.

I have focussed more on the gold-leaf work.

This is a reproduction of how the deities appear at the temple.
